Management by Zoom: Supervising and Engaging an Increasingly Remote Workforce
with Abtin Mehdizadgan

VIRTUAL - LINK WILL BE EMAILED CLOSER TO THE EVENT.

In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, many employers took emergency action, and made deep technological investments, to transition their teams to work remotely. For many businesses, this experiment proved fruitful: remote work is attractive because it expands the relevant labor market of potential applicants, reduces overhead expenditures, and provides employees with greater flexibility to manage their personal lives and their work lives. But the challenges of supervising remote workers are not insignificant. This presentation provides a best-practices approach to hiring, engaging, and retaining a remote workforce.

Abtin Mehdizadegan is a Director at Cross, Gunter, Witherspoon & Galchus, P.C. in Little Rock, Arkansas. Abtin’s practice focuses on traditional management-side labor and employment defense in the healthcare, transportation (railroad and aviation), manufacturing, and retail industries. He is active in the Firm’s litigation practice and has represented clients in administrative hearings, labor arbitration disputes, at trial, and on appeal before the Arkansas Supreme Court and Fifth and Eighth Circuit Courts of Appeal.

When he is not in the courtroom, Abtin advises clients in matters relating to compliance with federal and state employment laws and regulations (including the FMLA, ADA, Title VII, ADEA, ACRA, FOIA, among others), transportation law, affirmative action obligations for federal contractors, and drafting strategies for physician and insurer agreements. Outside of private practice, Abtin also serves as an Adjunct Professor at the UA Little Rock Bowen School of Law, where he teaches an upper-level course on Labor and Employment Law.

Given his commitment to excellence in the practice of law, Abtin was honored to receive the Spirit of Maine Award (2019) from the University of Maine, his alma mater, in recognition of his professional accomplishments, which include being named the youngest Director in the firm’s history; and Pro Bono Attorney of the Year (2017) by the Center for Arkansas Legal Services for his successful Supreme Court litigation that established important constitutional protections for victims of domestic violence in child guardianship proceedings. Abtin’s accomplishments have also been recognized by the Mid-South Super Lawyers for his dedication to employment law; Arkansas Business magazine as a member of its Class of “20 in their 20s, the New Influentials”; by HR Professionals magazine as a Rising Star in Employment Law; and by Arkansas Life magazine in its Top Attorneys feature.

Prior to joining the Firm, Abtin graduated with honors from the UA Little Rock Bowen School of Law (2013), where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review and competed as a member of the National Trial Team. Abtin is engaged in numerous civic organizations outside of the practice of law and he and his wife, Katie—who is also a lawyer—are avid pet lovers.
